Graduate Recruitment

The links below describe the current graduate study opportunities offered by faculty members. Some faculty, however, may be willing to supervise independent student research related to their areas of study. In all cases, however,听students should contact an appropriate faculty member before submitting an application for graduate study.听

Thank you for your interest in joining our lab! I am always happy to hear from students and postdocs interested in our ongoing research activities. Please contact me by email (sara.knox [at] mcgill.ca) for more details. The deadline for applications in geography is January 15, however, I encourage you to contact me well before this deadline. Also, please keep in mind the deadlines for external funding opportunities through NSERC. While graduate student support at 91社区 is available through teaching assistantships and 91社区 fellowships, I strongly encourage prospective students to apply for external funding.

My group works on issues having to do with land, environment, and development, mostly in Latin America. We use mixed methods, including GIS, statistics, content analysis, and ethnographic fieldwork, to answer questions about land-use change and its intersection with social and environmental change. Much of our work focuses on the Gran Chaco region of South America (Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia), but students in the group have also completed projects in Panama and Canada. Check out the lab website to learn more about what we do and how to apply!

I am interested to discuss graduate opportunities with prospective students wishing to work in Asia, especially Vietnam and northern Thailand (but other countries, including China, might be possible too). Fieldwork experience or extensive travel in a developing country/countries is essential. For China, intermediate language skills are needed. Currently I am particularly interested in taking on students with research interests and prior knowledge (broadly) in the fields of livelihoods, agricultural change, infrastructural violence and lives, and/or rural land use change as they pertain to ethnic minorities.听 I am also interested in informal economies in urban areas in Asia, such as street vendors, informal motorbike taxi drivers, app-based delivery drivers, and marketplace vendors; as well as the impacts of policy changes and infrastructural developments (e.g. urban railways, new transport laws) on these groups. I also have projects regarding running and its growing popularity with the growth of the middle class, and childhood change over three generations, which graduate students might be able to work on.听 Those with a broader background/interest in Asian studies are also encouraged to contact me - please do so with a suggested theme/topic (see my publications for possible overlaps in interests). Visit my webpage for further details, and note carefully the information that I would like you to send me with your initial email inquiry.
