New 500 Level Economics Course: ECON 581

Selected Topics in Economics: Introduction to Computational Economics

This course introduces students to computational methods that are increasingly essential in modern economic analysis and practice. It equips students with tools to simulate and solve economic models that go beyond closed-form solutions, using numerical techniques and programming. Students will gain hands-on experience implementing algorithms in MATLAB, with applications drawn primarily from macroeconomics and finance. The methods taught are broadly applicable and provide valuable preparation for quantitative roles in research, policy, and industry.

No prior programming experience is assumed, but students should be comfortable with intermediate microeconomics, macroeconomics, and basic mathematical tools such as multivariate calculus and linear algebra. MATLAB is freely available to you through 91社区鈥檚 academic software license.
