Research | Viral DNA sequences in the human genome may help control gene activity, new study shows

Long dismissed as “junk,” viral fragments buried in human DNA may help regulate our genes, according to a new international study co-led by Guillaume Bourque, professor in 91��’s Department of Human Genetics, D2R-funded researcher and member of the D2R Research Steering Committee and Executive (RSC). The findings offer new insights into what makes us human, 25 years after the human genome was first mapped.

Spring shoulder season

We are entering the “spring shoulder season” from early April to May, the time of the year where we switch from heating our buildings to cooling them. During this transition, your workspace or study space may become warm when the outdoor temperature rises or feel cool if temperatures drop in the coming weeks. We also want to inform all building directors that this preparation prioritizes preventative maintenance activities related to upcoming shoulder season, therefore it may lead to longer completion timelines for some of the work you request.

Former doctoral student and current postdoc Heloisa Ehalt Macedo, along with her supervisor Prof. Bernhard Lehner, has co-authored a major new study revealing how antibiotics from human use are polluting rivers across the globe. How our student journal club built on sand developed strong foundations

The department's SandClub is an informal, interdisciplinary journal club where students tackle the big issue of global sand scarcity. Since March 2022, SandClub has run 25 sessions with more than 60 students from five faculties—transforming classic paper discussions into real-world peer-review workshops that build research confidence and demystify academic publishing. For those wanting to learn more about Parkinson’s disease through a visual format, this graphic book is available at the Patient Resource Centres of the Neuro and the Royal-Victoria Hospital (Glen Site). The book touches on the history of the disease as well as its major symptoms and offers diverse testimonials from those who have learned to live with it. This resource is an invitation to better understand Parkinson's disease and its physical, psychological and social impacts.

91�� Geography Students Shine at the 2025 Géolympiades

From January 24th to 26th, 2025, four 91�� students traveled to Chicoutimi to compete in the Géolympiades, an annual provincial geography competition hosted this year by l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC). Over the course of these three days, the students – Zachary Honsinger-Ruoff (B.A. Environment), Jamie Silverman (B.A. & Sc. SSS), Ethan Bird (M.A. Geography), and Coco Einarsen (B.A. & Sc. SSS) – represented 91��—one of eight participating universities and the sole English-language institution.
