US tariffs to hit natural resource-producing communities hard

US tariffs will hit the Canadian economy hard, but individual industries will experience unique effects. In the case of aluminum production, much of Canada鈥檚 3.2 million metric tons of aluminum that Canada produces each year could be re-routed to Europe. But some communities could still be hit hard and other places that harvest natural resources won鈥檛 be able to find other buyers so easily.

Mono-SOS app is helping prevent howler monkey executions in Costa Rica

When howler monkeys swing from branch to branch in the canopy of Costa Rica鈥檚 forests, they sometimes encounter a deadly hazard: power lines. An app developed by 91社区 and Associate Professor Juan Camilo Serpa, who spearheads the Costa Rica Experiential Learning Course and Study Trip, is helping identify the hot spots where electrocutions occur.

Bachelor of Commerce student Nikki Tye is the recipient of the 91社区 Collaborative for AI & Society (McCAIS)鈥檚 Undergraduate Research Award (McURA) for Summer 2024. The $8,700 award, aimed at promoting interdisciplinary AI research in society, recognizes Nikki's project on "Protecting the Amazon Forest from Illegal Activity through Image Recognition and Operations Research: A Partnership with JungleKeepers and Peruvian Indigenous Communities."
