The Institute for the Study of International Development is pleased to welcome Eduardo Romero Dianderas to its full time academic staff.

Eduardo Romero Dianderas is an Assistant Professor at the Institute for the Study of International Development, 91��. He holds a PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology from Columbia University (2022) and specializes in the study of media technologies, technical infrastructures, and global environmental governance in Latin America.

English PhD candidate heads Montreal’s first trans film festival

English PhD candidate, Iris Pintiuta, created Exposure, Montreal's first trans film festival. The festival aims to promote inclusive representation for trans people, as well as create programs and events that advance trans acceptance.

School of Information Studies Professors Awarded $5.6M Grant to Propel Canada to the Forefront of Cybersecurity Data Analytics Research

Professor Benjamin Fung, Canada Research Chair in Data Mining for Cybersecurity, and Professor Steven Ding, both of the School of Information Studies in the Faculty of Arts, are part of a team that has recently been awarded a $5.6 million grant, funded under the NSERC Alliance Grants-CSE. The project, the only one to receive funding from NSERC Alliance Grants-CSE, will provide a multimodal, comprehensive solution for exploratory analysis of unstructured data, with a strong focus on cybersecurity applications.

Professor Erik Martinez Kuhonta, ISID Associate Member and former Director, publishes an opinion piece on the recent arrrest and transfer to the International Criminal Court of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. As Professor Kuhonta writes, "The International Criminal Court’s stunning arrest last week of former president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, on charges of crimes against humanity was a powerful strike for human rights and justice. It was also a decisive move by the current President, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., against the Duterte family."

Every summer growing up, Fiona Beaty's family would make the trip from Vancouver to Bowen Island, where she would spend her time playing in the woods and turning over rocks at the shore in her search for crabs. Now, Beaty is back on the coast and her more recent explorations in marine biology are getting much more attention. Last month, she was awarded a National Geographic Early Career grant to support her latest project, the Howe Sound Atl'ka7tsem Marine Reference Guide.
